About Humana Medicare Plans

Humana is one of the nation’s largest Medicare providers, offering a variety of Medicare Advantage, Supplement (Medigap), and Prescription Drug (Part D) plans. In San Diego County, Humana has maintained strong relationships with local doctors and clinics. Humana’s advantage plans continue to expand their options with PPO networks that offer better flexibility for patients seeking to visit Scripps out of network.

Whether you’re looking for an all-in-one Advantage plan or the freedom of a Supplement plan, HealthyMarks can help you compare every Humana option available in your area.

Types of Humana Medicare Plans:

Humana Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Humana’s Medicare Advantage plans combine your hospital, medical, and prescription coverage into one convenient plan.

Popular Humana Advantage plans in San Diego include:

  • Humana HMO – lower monthly premiums, with a coordinated care network.
  • Humana PPO – flexible network access and no referrals required for specialists.

Humana Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Humana’s Supplement plans like Plan G and Plan N work alongside Original Medicare to cover out-of-pocket costs such as copays and deductibles. With a Supplement plan, you can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare, including top facilities like UCSD and Scripps.

These plans are especially popular for retirees who travel frequently or want predictable healthcare costs with minimal restrictions.

Is Humana Accepted at the Hospitals and Doctors I Want to Visit?

Just like every Supplement Plan, Humana Supplement Plans are going to offer access to all the networks of doctors you need to visit here in San Diego. You’ll also have the ability to visit doctors in different cities or states if your care deems it necessary. However, Humana Advantage Plans are much more limited. Humana Advantage Plans are not going to grant you access to UCSD or Scripps. UCSD has tightened which Advantage Plans they accept and Humana is no longer accepted at UCSD Health. Scripps is no longer accepting any Advantage Plans as in network. If you want to access Scripps or UCSD while on Humana, you’ll need a Supplement Plan.

Doctors and Hospitals that Accept Humana in San Diego

Humana’s network includes many local doctors and clinics, but hospital access can vary depending on the plan type.

UCSD Health – Beginning in 2026, UCSD will only accept some Humana Advantage PPO plans and all Supplement plans.

Sharp HealthCare – Sharp accepts many Humana Advantage and PPO plans.

Scripps Health – No longer accepts Medicare Advantage plans as of 2024. Humana Supplement plans still work here.

Perlman Clinic, Graybill, and Arch Health – Common primary care groups within Humana’s network.

HealthyMarks will verify your specific doctors before you enroll so there are no surprises.

    • 3. What’s the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?

Medicaid, or Medi-Cal in California, is a healthcare program for low-income individuals who could not otherwise afford health insurance.

    • 4. Should I stick with my Large Group Employer health insurance policy or switch to Medicare?

Large Group Employers have access to health insurance plans that the rest of us do not. Many of the large group plans have what is called “Composite Rating.” Or in other words, these plans do not get more expensive when you get older. You will pay the same as a younger employee.

Because of this, some of these large group employer plans are competitive with the Medicare plans in San Diego.

You should evaluate both and select the better insurance plan.

    • 5. Should I still switch to Medicare even if my family is covered by my insurance plan?

Having a spouse as a dependent on your group insurance plan may impact whether or not you switch to Medicare. When you enroll in Medicare, your spouse can then enroll in his/her own individual market health insurance plan because losing insurance is a “qualifying event” to switch to a new plan. However, maybe your spouse doesn’t want to make that switch or your employer is contributing towards both you and your dependent’s insurance premiums. In this scenario, consider speaking with a HealthyMarks professional for a Plan Evaluation.

You should evaluate both options and select the better option for you and your family.

    • 6. Should I stick with my group health insurance policy or should I switch to Medicare?

In short, you should evaluate both options and select the better insurance plan.

There are times when an employer's group policy is better priced with better benefits compared to the options through Medicare. There are also many times when the Medicare options will be better priced and offer better benefits.

    • 7. Should I stick with my current Individual Health Insurance policy or switch to Medicare?

Typically, Medicare pricing is much better than what is available to employees through their work or what is available on the individual market. Medicare plans are generally much less expensive because the government is helping pay the monthly premium. Furthermore, these Medicare plans are very well received by the members who enroll in them. Members often experience less out of pocket expenses when on Medicare.

You should evaluate both and select the better insurance plan.
