HealthSpring Medicare Plans in San Diego County

Beginning in 2026, Cigna’s Medicare plans will officially rebrand as HealthSpring.

The change follows Cigna’s sale of its Medicare business. For San Diego residents, this means the same coverage you’ve known under Cigna Medicare will now appear under the HealthSpring name. But there are some important details and cost changes to review before you renew or switch plans for 2026.

HealthyMarks can help you understand what this transition means for your coverage, your doctors, and your medications.

What Is HealthSpring?

HealthSpring will offer the same types of Medicare plans Cigna did, including both Medicare Advantage (MAPD) and Prescription Drug (Part D) plans.

While the name is new, many plans and benefits will remain familiar. Like every new year, there will be adjustments in premiums, deductibles, and networks for 2026. If you currently have a Cigna plan, you’ll automatically transition to HealthSpring, but you should still review your plan details this fall to confirm that it remains your best option.

Starting in 2026, all Cigna Medicare Advantage and Part D plans will transition to HealthSpring. HealthyMarks can confirm that your preferred doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions are covered in your plan for next year.

HealthSpring Medicare Advantage Plans

HealthSpring’s Medicare Advantage (MAPD) plans combine Hospital (Part A), Medical (Part B), and Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D), along with additional benefits into a single plan. Just like with other Medicare Advantage carriers, your choice of doctors and hospitals depends on the plan’s network. HealthyMarks can help verify whether your preferred providers like UCSD, Scripps, or Sharp accept HealthSpring plans for 2026.

HealthSpring Prescription Drug (Part D) Plans

If you have Original Medicare and want drug coverage only, HealthSpring will also offer standalone Part D plans. These plans cover prescription medications through a pharmacy network and help protect against high out-of-pocket drug costs. Because formularies and costs may change from year to year, it’s always a good idea to review your medications with a HealthyMarks agent during the Annual Enrollment Period.

Are HealthSpring Plans Accepted by San Diego Doctors?

Provider acceptance is the most important question when choosing a Medicare Advantage plan.

Not all local systems will participate in HealthSpring’s 2026 network. UCSD, Scripps, and Sharp each have different relationships with Advantage carriers, and these can change year to year. HealthyMarks can confirm whether your doctors or specialists are in-network for the 2026 plan year and help you explore alternatives if needed.

Comparing HealthSpring to Other Medicare Carriers

In San Diego County, several strong Medicare carriers compete for your business, including Blue Shield, SCAN, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare®.

Each carrier offers different benefits, premiums, and provider access. While HealthSpring may be new to the area under its updated name, its plans are worth comparing alongside these other options especially if you’re looking for a network that includes your specific doctors and hospitals.

HealthyMarks will help you compare your options side by side, ensuring you keep access to your providers while managing costs.

“I recently turned 65 and was in need of help evaluating Medicare. Before our enrollment meeting, I had saved and never looked at this stack of papers I received in the mail from multiple insurance companies. It was overwhelming and not helpful. Keaton and Alexa visited me at my home and changed the situation completely. I was able to quickly wrap my head around my Medicare options and make a selection. Thanks for your help!”

  • 4. Should I stick with my Large Group Employer health insurance policy or switch to Medicare?

Large Group Employers have access to health insurance plans that the rest of us do not. Many of the large group plans have what is called “Composite Rating.” Or in other words, these plans do not get more expensive when you get older. You will pay the same as a younger employee.

Because of this, some of these large group employer plans are competitive with the Medicare plans in San Diego.

You should evaluate both and select the better insurance plan.

  • 5. Should I still switch to Medicare even if my family is covered by my insurance plan?

Having a spouse as a dependent on your group insurance plan may impact whether or not you switch to Medicare. When you enroll in Medicare, your spouse can then enroll in his/her own individual market health insurance plan because losing insurance is a “qualifying event” to switch to a new plan. However, maybe your spouse doesn’t want to make that switch or your employer is contributing towards both you and your dependent’s insurance premiums. In this scenario, consider speaking with a HealthyMarks professional for a Plan Evaluation.

You should evaluate both options and select the better option for you and your family.

  • 6. Should I stick with my group health insurance policy or should I switch to Medicare?

In short, you should evaluate both options and select the better insurance plan.

There are times when an employer's group policy is better priced with better benefits compared to the options through Medicare. There are also many times when the Medicare options will be better priced and offer better benefits.

  • 7. Should I stick with my current Individual Health Insurance policy or switch to Medicare?

Typically, Medicare pricing is much better than what is available to employees through their work or what is available on the individual market. Medicare plans are generally much less expensive because the government is helping pay the monthly premium. Furthermore, these Medicare plans are very well received by the members who enroll in them. Members often experience less out of pocket expenses when on Medicare.

You should evaluate both and select the better insurance plan.
