Some SCAN Medicare Advantage plans are changing for 2027, and members who receive care through UC San Diego Health should review their coverage carefully this Open Enrollment. Certain existing members may be able to keep their current UCSD relationship through grandfathering arrangements. However, these arrangements depend on the member’s specific plan and medical group.
Can New SCAN Members Choose UCSD Primary Care?
No. New members should not assume that enrolling in SCAN Alta or SCAN Select provides access to a UCSD primary care doctor. UCSD’s own primary care network is not accepting new SCAN patients through these arrangements. Keeping an existing relationship and establishing a new one are different situations, so a friend’s experience with SCAN may not reflect the options available to someone enrolling for 2027. If you want full access to UCSD Primary Care, you’ll want to enroll in a Supplement.
Limited Access to UCSD Specialists May Still Be Available
SCAN continues to offer certain arrangements that allow members to receive primary care through affiliated providers, such as Perlman Clinic or One Medical, with access to UCSD specialty care through approved referrals and authorizations. This does not provide unrestricted access to every UCSD doctor or department. Your primary care doctor, medical group, and exact SCAN plan determine how you can access care.
For 2027, the new SCAN Costco Medicare Advantage (HMO) plan is an option to review. If you are considering this plan to access UCSD specialists, HealthyMarks can help confirm whether your chosen primary care doctor and medical group offer the appropriate referral pathway.
